For Puck's Sake
The Ostara Tarot is one of those decks that I’ve been waiting a long time to get my hands on. When I initially discovered the deck it was already out of print, being an indie deck originally and now being mass produced. This deck is a collaboration of different artists; Morgan Applejohn, Eden Cooke, Krista Gibbard, and Julia Iredale. Despite the many hands working on this, the deck has a very cohesive feel to it. Thematically, the deck is dark enough to satisfy your inner witch, while being “soft” enough to use it on clients without freaking them out. The cards have a very comforting vibe to them while being highly fantastical simultaneously. There’s a comic book meets children’s book meets fantasy art aesthetic to the images. I’m also in love with the cards’ backs, which is the perfect example of how this deck is witchy yet friendly and approachable.
Along with the deck comes a 111 page booklet that to my surprise was in full color, and is really beautifully designed – just as everything is with this deck. The guidebook discusses the imagery of each card, sharing the artists’ unique vision for the Ostara Tarot. There’s also keywords, the card meaning and what the card means when reversed. Traditional symbolism of the more “standard decks” like the Rider-Waite-Smith are thrown out the window in this creative reimagining of the tarot, while keeping fairly true to the card’s meanings.
The Ostara Tarot‘s glossy card stock is fantastic and the cards each have a beautiful silver gilding to their edges. They come in a really nice magnetic box, which is nice for sturdy storage, but not the best when it comes to constantly accessing them or carrying them with you while you travel, so you probably want to figure out some other form of storage if you do take them with you on the go. However, the box design is much better than other large sturdy boxes of this nature – particularly because it’s not overwhelmingly big and because you can actually get the cards out of it without much hassle unlike other decks like the Mary-El Tarot.
